Snow, ice, and cold temperatures are likely sending your facility managers indoors to focus more on keeping your company's indoor climate comfortable and everything safe at the ground level. And it's safe to say that not many people have intentions of going up on their roof in the middle of winter's frigid grip. One thing is for sure though, winter isn't cutting your roof any slack. Heavy Snow

Areas prone to heavy snow fall are typically built to withstand extra weight. But what you many don't consider is the extra weight that is added when snow partially thaws and refreezes. It's pretty significant. Too much weight can cause cracking and popping sounds, bent supports, and other problems. 

Thermal Shock

Repeated temperature extremes can be tough on roofing systems. Older roofs tend to break under this pressure like an old rubber band because they lose their ability to expand and contract sufficiently. Having your roof inspected before extreme weather seasons can give you a good idea of how much life is left in your roof. 

Freeze/Thaw

This causes problems for roofs that are at the end of their life cycle. When you have snow, ice, partial thawing and refreezing, it usually results in leaks if your roof isn't in good shape. This problem usually becomes obvious in the spring when you have to get the buckets out. 

Ice Dams

You know, those lovely things that show up on your roof's edge. These things can cause a good amount of damage. Water backed up behind them may seep into other layers of your roof resulting in leaks or even a collapse.    

What you can do: 

• Check your roof thoroughly at least twice a year. Look for things like dark spots or ponding water, cracks or holes, seam damage, and more.
• Keep drains clean. Leave or other debris can clog them and potentially allow ice dams to form.
• Make sure your building is well insulated. Problem areas can be found with infrared testing.
